The Person of Christ
by
John Owen
It is a question Jesus asked,
"What do you think about the
Christ"
(Matthew 22:42). The Pharisees did not
know Him at all.
But what of the ones who profess to know
Him. What do they think of the Christ? If they are truly saints, surely they
will want to know all about Him. "To those who believe to the saving of
the soul, He is, He always has been, precious . . . everything that is good,
useful, amiable, desirable, here or unto eternity" writes John Owen in The
Person of Christ.
"By Him they are brought into the
nearest knowledge, alliance, and friendship with God, the firmest union unto
Him, and the most holy communion with Him." All that our finite natures
are capable of may be had, and can be so conducted to the eternal enjoyment
of Him. Should we not then make it the principal design of our lives to know
Him " the mystery of His wisdom, grace, and love of God. Will we
not seek after conformity to Him in all the characters of Divine goodness
and holiness which are revealed to us in the Scriptures?
In this classic book are the many ways to
learn of Christ, why He is our only foundation, how He can be both Man and
the
"express image of the essence
of God"
(Heb. 1:3). Here are laid out for the
reader His honor, glory, life and power. Learn the keys to love and obey
Him. Marvel at the wisdom of God in constituting the Christ, so that He
might be the sole One who could live, suffer, and die in order to redeem
men, even while they were
without strength, ungodly, sinners
enemies, to reconcile
them to God.
He is glorious in His love, in His
mediation, in His exaltation, in His communication of Himself to His elect.
If you have not seen Him and known Him like this, let John Owen lead you
through the Scriptures.
What do you think about the Christ? Should
we not all yearn after Him as did the Apostle Paul?
"rather, I also count all things to
be loss because of the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord,
. . . that I might gain Christ, and be found in Him, . . . to know Him and
the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His suffering . . . if
somehow I might attain to a resurrection from the dead" (Phil.
3:8-11)
John Owen (1616-1683) was a noted preacher,
and one of the most powerful theologians in the Puritan age. He was
Vice-Chancellor of Oxford under Cromwell.. His works total 23 volumes, all
invincible to any contrary argument.
