Robert Young takes the knowledge he gained in doing Young's Literal Translation of the Bible and gives insights on various verses of the New Testament.
He often disagrees with the KJV, and also with the lexicons. For instance he says that the ''meek shall inherit the land'' rather than the earth. It is true that the word can be translated ''land,'' but it seems to disagree with many statements in the Old Testament that say that the meek inherit the earth.
He is noted for his close attention to grammar, saying for instance that ''an a for a the, or a the for an a'' distorts God’s message. Yet at times he follows other translators in translating an adjective with a verb (Matt. 4:24, saying ''paralyzed'' when it is an adjective. In John 3, he gets John 3:8 right, rejecting the notion that ''the wind blows where it listeth.''
Instead, as he states here, and as the Literal Translation by Green states, ''The Spirit breathes where He wishes, etc.'' However, throughout 3:3-8 Young fails to point out that the word he translates as ''born again'' is the Greek word meaning ''to generate.'' One must be generated from the Spirit (3:8) not born of the Spirit. This entire discourse is to emphasize the need for regeneration of the sinner to be able to see the kingdom of God. But he is incorrect in using the expression ''believing on Him'' instead of the correct ''believing into Him.'' John throughout all his writings never fails to use ''believe into'' when referring to Christ. For all of that, there are many, many verses illuminated by Young’s comments. For instance, he points out the word so commonly translated ''betrayed'' always means ''delivered up.'' It is also important to remember that the word ''by'' very many times means ''through.'' He gives the reader the right view of the quotations from the prophets, noting that it is said that God spoke such and such ''through Isaiah,'' or whatever other prophet is being quoted.
The prophet is being used as the conduit through which the message of God is being conveyed to the reader..
In John 8:58 Young notes that the Lord Jesus used the expression ''I am,'' but he does not recognize that the Lord is identifying Himself with Exodus 3:14 by saying ''I AM,'' that is He is one in essence with the other members of the Trinity and is claiming that He is the One who gave that name to Himself, ''I AM THAT I AM.'' If the reader will trace down those 15 places where He said the bare ''I AM,'' it will be found that the Jews were offended with Him because He was claiming Himself to be God.
That is why they called it blasphemy. In no case does he incorrectly say, ''I am he.'' for that would totally misinform the reader, hiding the face that He is saying I AM as a declaration that He is God.
