Pink’s doctrinal and expository works were well-known and well received before he penned the articles in this book. Here he turns to the application of doctrinal teaching, saying, ''Doctrinal Christianity is both the ground and the motive of practical Christianity, for it is principle and not emotion or impulse which is the dynamic of the spiritual life.'' But doctrine, unless reduced to practice, is of no avail: ''There is no doctrine revealed in Scripture for a merely speculative knowledge, but all is to exert a powerful influence upon conduct. God’s design in all that He has revealed to us is to the purifying of our affections and the transforming of our characters.''

The first chapters relate to the Christian’s beginnings in his new life - his conversion, his new birth, and the changes that take place. These are not to be omitted in a book on practical Christianity. Unless they are understood in relation to practice, all that follows would be misunderstood. No progress in the Christian life is possible until he truly understands how bad his natural state is, and just what took place when God brought him into a state of grace.
Chapters 4 through 8 deal with the attitudes a Christian should have toward progress in the Christian life if he is really a Christian. Pink maintains that even a renewed and spiritual life in Christ is not able to produce good in his life, but he gives practical recommendations on what a Christian can do in spite of his inability.

Chapters 9 through 12 deal with authority in Christian practice. First, the authority of God, and of His Word, the authority of spiritual leaders, the authority of employers, and other authorities. In the light of today’s era of self-assertion of independence in almost all circumstances, it is most important that Divine authority, and the extent and limit of human authority, be thoroughly understood.

The last chapter relates to the enjoyment of God’s best for our lives. Most readers will find this the most practical of all that God does for and in us, the principle that still holds, ''Whatever a man sows, that he shall also reap'' (Gal. 5:7). There are also practical selections from the Scriptures to aid those who have seriously failed in his practice.

Pink (1890-1953) was a Baptist Preacher in England, Australia, and the United States. He is most famous for his book The Sovereignty of God. After its advent, he, assisted by his editor Mr. I. Herendeen, launched his yearly publication, Studies in the Scriptures in 1921. These continued until his death, totaling altogether 33 volumes of 288 pp. each.
