Like nearly all of Pink’s books, these comments first appeared in about two dozen issues of his Studies in the Scriptures magazine. In other issues he had dealt with Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, and the Irresistible Grace of the Holy Spirit. Now he takes up the fifth of the Doctrines of Grace, The Perseverance of the Saints.
Citing a host of Scriptures, the author points out that the Holy Spirit regenerates God’s elect at a time decreed by God in eternity. This regeneration gives repentance and faith to the sinner, and by this saves both from the penalty and the love of sin. This new creature, now being spiritually alive, is then indwelt by the Holy Trinity. The new life then is beset by the world, the flesh, and the devil to the point that he or she must be saved from the power of sin for the rest of life in this world, appealing constantly for the Spirit’s preservation. Lastly, at the appointed time to depart from this world, there is finally salvation from the presence of sin.
Satan has devised many delusions that he and his demons have practiced on children of God. Those who fall victim to any of these stratagems should firmly fix in their minds these three things:
(1) For any of the elect to perish would necessarily entail a defeated Father; for it would be a defeat of His eternal purposes;
(2) then there would be a disappointed Son who would never see the full travail of His soul and be satisfied;
(3) there would also be a disgraced Spirit, who had failed to preserve those entrusted to His care. Hundreds of Scriptures in both Testaments give the lie to this satanic deceit. It is written, ''this is the will of the Father having sent Me, that of all which He has given Me, I shall not lose [any] of it, but shall raise it up in the last day'' (John 6:39). ''And I give to them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall anyone pluck them out of My hand. My Father, who gave them to Me is greater than all, and no one is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand'' (John 10:28, 29). God has loved His elect saints with an everlasting love (Jer. 31:3) Therefore, His almighty power will guarantee that they reach Heaven safely.
