A Special Tribute

Jay P. Green, Sr., U.S. Army Veteran, Ordained Minister, Bible Translator, Christian Author, Editor, Publisher, Businessman and Dedicated Servant of God

1918–2008

Jay P. Green, Sr. was born December 1, 1918. An unusually bright boy, he began his freshman year of high school at the age of 10. Because of his age and size, his high school years lacked social joy - so much so that he had to repeat one grade level. He graduated high school at the age of 15 and later enrolled at Washington University of St. Louis.

In 1940 Jay P. Green enlisted to fight for his country. He became a pilot for the then U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) and fought in the European Theater. He flew as the wing man for a Fighter Ace and was shot down three times, always managing to survive and make his way back to Allied Forces. With the rank of Captain he completed his Tour of Duty and remained in the Active Reserves as a pilot until 1955.

In 1949 at the age of 30 he is quoted in a personal testimony as being

“suddenly made alive in Christ Jesus”. From that day on, he was moved to read the Bible through and through with an insatiable thirst for the Word of God that lasted his entire life. Within two years of his conversion he had been placed under the tutelage of a sound and Godly preacher who introduced him to the powerful Christian insights of the Puritan works. He was also accepted as a student-by-mail of Arthur W. Pink, a Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar of notable influence and works. In 1954, Jay P. Green, Sr. founded Sovereign Grace Publishers. The Lord filled his heart with an urgency to share the knowledge he received from reading and studying the many published works of the Puritans. Those studies led him to reprint many of the Puritan works (over 150 titles) as well as non-Puritan authors like Arthur W. Pink, Charles H. Spurgeon and others. Most of the works he brought back into print are still available today from Sovereign Grace Publishers. Sovereign Grace Publishers went on to become one of the largest Christian book publishers and distributors of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, S.G.P. was operated as a ministry first and a business second.
