Product Information

ibbes was an early English Puritan preacher of considerable note, very influential in the lives of others. In this one binding are four of his famous expositions: The Bruised Reed and Smoking Flax; The Soul’s Conflict with Itself; A Fountain Sealed; and, The Fountain Opened.

The Bruised Reed and Smoking Flax; is a masterful exposition of Matthew 12:20. In this the author explains what the reed refers to, then he explains what is to be ''a bruised reed.'' The bruised reed is one that for the most part is in some misery. Such need to seek help from Christ, for sin is the cause of their misery. They must know and appreciate the fact that Christ will not ''break the bruised reed.''

God’s children in their first conversion have but a little measure of grace, and that little is mixed with corruption; which, like smoke, is offensive. But Christ, who was gracious to Thomas, to Peter, to John the Baptist, etc., will not quench ''the smoking flax,'' which yet may be blown into the flame of love and devotion.

The Soul’s Conflict with Itself is an exposition of Psalm 42:11. The soul of David was troubled outwardly and inwardly; he was first cast down and then he was disquieted. What did David do? He summons up reasons to trust in God. He remembers past blessings. Amidst his tears he charges his soul to hope in God. He solaces himself, ''Jehovah will command His loving-kindness;'' ''Hope in God, for I yet thank Him for the salvation of my face and my God'' (verses 6, 8, 11). The author considers the souls’ conflict of various Christians, and advises.

In A Fountain Sealed Sibbes gives a heart-comforting view of the sealing of the Holy Spirit in an exposition of Ephesians 4:30. A very full and informative view of the Holy Spirit is given. He is holy with a holiness that is grieved by any unholiness in those He indwells. What foolishness to grieve the Person who is our counselor, our comforter, our guide in the whole course of our life. Who else is it that ''works in us to will and to do of God’s good pleasure?''
The Fountain Opened. is an exposition of 1 Timothy 3:10. (1) What is ''the mystery of godliness''? (2) The joy and wonder to us of Christ who was ''God manifest in the flesh.'' Plumb these depths with Sibbes.

Sibbes was both a great preacher and a great teacher, a counselor in the mold of Heaven. He was an expositor of note in his time., and so His works have always been much appreciated for their helpful and faithful Biblical teaching.   376 pages, blue hard cover
